Did you know that by observing what colors a person wears on a frequent basis…or is attracted to…can give you insight into their personality? For example, those who frequently wear red are most often extroverts, are very passionate, and easily excitable! Of course we break all the rules that one day of the year when love and passion abound! Or maybe it’s the other way, we become more sensually playful, excitable, and passionate because red surrounds us on Valentine’s Day!

Get to know your Valentine a little better. Notice what color they frequently wear. Understand their unspoken nature through the colors they wear. Then get an upper hand on adjusting your approach to building your relationship! Listed below are characteristics associated with color preferences:

orange – strong-willed, independent self-starter

yellow – good communicator

green – sensitive, caring, observant, diplomatic

blue – sincere, deep feeling, creative, imaginative

purple – intuitive, compassionate, and has high standards

Look in women’s fashion magazines today and you’ll see lots of “leg” showing! If you were to visit the Indianapolis Museum of Art and stroll through the art work of centuries past, it would not be the women’s but the men’s legs that you would see artistically displayed! In fact for centuries women’s legs were hidden by the dress, as well as the brush of an artist.

Fast forward to the famous photo of Marilyn Monroe caught with her airlifted skirt– Believe it, or not, when that photo was caught, it stirred up controversy! Today, we don’t even “raise an eyebrow” over photos such as this!

What did the shorts of a 1970ish men’s basketball player look like? Short shorts revealed a “lot of muscular leg”! While the leg hems have been dropping on men’s athletic shorts, women’s skirt and short hems have been rising! During this same time period, women began to “wear the pants”. Hence the woman’s “pant suit” started showing up in the office, in place of the skirt or dress!

The “Psychology of Dress” Course
All this, and more, is learned by Fashion Merchandising students in the “Psychology of Dress” course, Harrison College. Penny Rosenthal, Chair of the program and instructor for this course provides insightful learning experiences and gives fashion a whole new meaning!

Julie Carson, MA/OTR, Color/LIFE-style, and Image Consultant of Indianapolis is currently attending this course with a whole new fascination with fashion-ation!. Julie serves on the advisory board for Harrison College, has mentored a fashion-merchandising student, and has assisted with make-up at the program’s annual student run fashion show!

Julie strives to assist her clients with understanding their own “personality of dress” which includes a snapshot of their personality while looking at their physical characteristics. Fashion all this together and you won’t just simply dress “in style” but you will walk out “with style”!

We don’t talk enough about how Inner Health creates Outer Beauty! Fall is upon us and the days are getting shorter and cooler! Take the time to focus on your outer beauty by taking a walk in the green grass while enjoying turning leaves. Green is the color of balance and relaxation which we need as we turn our thoughts toward changing weather & activities.

Most importantly, now is the time when we need to grab that last bit of sunshine to prepare our bodies for the winter. Did you know the best source of Vitamin D is from the sun! According to the Archives of Internal Medicine75% of Americans are not getting enough! While we have been protecting ourselves with sun screen, we have failed to realize the benefits the sun gives us as well. Ten minutes of sun exposure WITHOUT sunscreen is beneficial unless your doctor has advised you otherwise.

Your body actually produces vitamin D when exposed to the sunshine! Vitamin D is good for your bones preventing fractures and tooth loss, prevents cancer and heart disease, and increases muscle strength! To get the same benefits from food that a 10 minute walk in the sun would give you, you would have to eat 6.5 lbs of mushrooms or 150 egg yolks or 30 servings of fortified cereal or 30 cups of fortified orange juice Source: AARP Sept/Oct 2009 (think of how many calories you are saving too!)

So take advantage of these beautiful fall days and take a walk for both your inner health and outer beauty! To learn more watch for Julie’s book coming out in 2010!

Recently I was asked by a student to assist with his senior project. He had a plan. His goal and mission was to not only share a message but to educate other students, faculty, and parents in understanding the challenges that individuals face with autism. He sought my input as an Indianapolis based Image Consultant and Occupational Therapist to contribute to his educational video.

The information that I compiled was not only applicable to people who require accommodations but can benefit and “empower” all across the life span, those in grade school, middle school, high school, college, and even returning adults! Hopefully Part II will not only benefit you but your family and friends as well. So pass it along…..

The Back to School Wardrobe Part II:

There is a Positive Connection between How We Dress and present ourselves and How We Feel about ourselves!

3 Simple Steps can make this all possible:

Know your best colors to build your wardrobe around

Know what not to wear – Avoid clothing that doesn’t make you feel good

Know what to wear — Discover a style or brand that works well with your personality and body build

1. Knowing Your Best Colors provides the foundation for your wardrobe and helps you feel your best when you get dressed!

Identify your favorite color! Chances are that color is your favorite because it makes you feel good! You may want to build your wardrobe around that color! Colors of your clothes, colors of your room or closet, and colors of your sheets and bath towels can impact how you feel! When you look at the rainbow, the reds, oranges, and yellows are energy colors that can excite you! Using a red towel in the morning can give you energy but wearing red all day can make you excitable!

Through research we know a lot about colors. Yellow makes us talkative. Green is in the middle of the rainbow and is cleansing and balancing. A green towel can make you feel clean and wearing green can make you feel balanced. Wearing blues, indigo, and violets calm us. Wearing turquoise, blue or white pajamas or putting sheets on your bed in those colors can calm you and help you sleep. Wearing blue or white may help relax muscles and ease asthma.

When I perform a color analysis with you, you can learn about what colors you look best in and what colors will help you feel your best as well. Then we can build your wardrobe around these colors. We can remove what does not fit anymore and start building a wardrobe that you can wear everything interchangeably. Until that time, you can put a special mark with a permanent marker on it to identify clothes that go together.

2. Know what not to wear – Avoid clothing that doesn’t make you feel good

When you go shopping take time to feel the clothing. Read labels to learn what the clothing is made of, eliminating potential sensory problems. Learn to avoid clothing textures that make you feel uncomfortable. While you are learning how to read labels learn about how to care for the clothing. Read the labels to learn about whether you can put it in the washer and dryer or whether or not it requires dry cleaning. Moms and dads this is what your son or daughter needs to learn as he or she transitions. Students this is part of the process of learning how to choose clothing and dress for success in a job.

3. Know what to wear – - Discover a style or brand that works well with your personality and body build

When you look at yourself in the mirror look at the texture of your hair and body build. If you have fine smooth hair and a petite body build wear smaller prints, smooth textures, and smaller jewelry. If you are tall and have a larger body build, you can wear larger stripes/prints and larger jewelry. Knowing your body build will help you know how to dress your body.

Guys you may feel more comfortable in a button down shirt OR maybe you feel more comfortable in a polo shirt. Find a brand that you are comfortable with and buy a few shirts in your best colors that you can wear with jeans, khaki pants, navy blue or black shorts. Girls find a brand of blouses that you like. Chances are there are a few different styles that you can mix and match with pants or a skirt. (That is referred to as “capsule” dressing) Wearing a particular style is a form of expressing yourself!

When you go to buy undergarments or socks stick to one style and buy several pair, then when one sock gets a hole in it you can simply throw it away and wear the other one with another. If you buy 8-12 pair in one color or brand at the beginning of the school year it should last you the year through.

Go to your closet and clean out the things you do not currently wear. Give things that are too small to a younger family member, donate it, or throw it away. You really only need 5-7 shirts or blouses and 3-5 pairs of pants, skirts, or shorts. Don’t forget to have fun and practice what I call “retail therapy in your closet”, have fun discovering new outfits to wear from what is already in your closet (or in your sister’s or brother’s closet, but sh-h-h do not tell them I sent you!) Once you have cleared your closet of things you can’t or won’t wear make a shopping list.

Mom and dad, engaging in shopping activities teaches lots of skills from how to dress yourself with style, comfort, and self-expression; money management; community mobility; and so on. To prevent anxiety and create a successful activity, consider the timing. Avoid busy times, talk with a store manager to learn when the best times are. Shop at a smaller store. To avoid anxiety with the vast array of choices, parents you may possibly want to have some things pulled out ahead of time and put on hold so your son or daughter can still make the final decision but lessen the anxiety with too many choices.

And don’t forget to praise your son or daughter on how he or she looks. Helping them to discover how wonderfully made they are, is exciting and rewarding for both you and them!

Should you have any further questions about how an occupational therapist can assist you, visit: www.aota.org

With simple knowledge, inspiration and praise every child, woman and man can go on recreating herself/himself endlessly!

This “Image Builder Signature Style Tip” was provided by Julie Carson, Color, LIFE-style, and Image Consultant & Speaker. Let Julie assist you and your company through a 60 Minute Makeover incorporating the Art and Science of Signature Self-Packaging. You will not only save time and money but you will learn the difference of simply being “in style”, that is dressing in the moment, vs. “having style” presenting a consistent and timeless outward appearance and effective personal/professional “Signature BRAND”!

Suzi recently relocated. Her challenge: “Now that I’ve moved it, what do I do with it?”

Suzi requested a “Closet Retail Therapy” session with Julie Carson, Indianapolis based, Color, LIFE-style, and Image Consultant. Here is what she had to say after the session:

I have a pretty good sense of color and I generally know what looks good on me. That does not mean that it was not a great experience to have someone go through my closet with me and turn it into a functioning wardrobe. Sometimes you just need someone who has good taste and judgment to say “No, that really doesn’t look good on you.” Or “That color shirt would really be better with these pants.” There are combinations I could have been wearing that might have saved me a trip to the store, looking for something new. I am a bargain hunter with too many pieces of clothing because I get them very inexpensively. Sometimes I get something new and do not know what to do with it. Sometimes it is because I should never have bought it.

Being aware of what to look for may keep me from some of those impulses that seem like a good idea (Doesn’t everyone need a white t-shirt?) but that will just hang in my closet.

OK, I know I look good in black, but maybe a bit more color might be nice. (And it is really DARK in that closet.) I do wear scarves sometimes because they are pretty, but I never considered them as a way to make a color or outfit that isn’t quite right into something that really works.

Sincerely,

Suzi Shapiro

Can you relate to Suzi?

Do you have a CLOSET CHALLENGE? Whether you have just moved, are clearing out last school year’s clothes from your children’s closets to make room for this year’s size, moving your clothes to the front of the closet with the cooler weather, or simply need to make room… Julie can assist you with de-cluttering your closets and making the most of what you already have! Now that’s an economic stimulus package!

Thank you Suzi Shapiro for allowing us to share your story.

Cut Closet Cluster!!!

To organize a closet, first go through everything in your closet. Throw out anything that has a rip, stain, or is faded. Anything you don’t wear anymore, but is still in good condition, can be sold at a resale store like Selective Seconds in Greenwood or sold on Ebay! $$$ Another alternative is to donate to a charity, such as Goodwill or Salvation Army.
Plus: Ask for a receipt so you can write off your donations on your taxes!

Buy a set of sturdy plastic or wooden hangers. Wire hangers are very damaging on clothes! Having a set that is the same draws your eyes away from other stuff in your closet. Arrange clothing from light to dark. This will make it easier to match up outfits by color.

Remove anything in your closet that is not related to clothing! Put it in the basement or in storage

Tips: Off-season clothing can be stored away to create more room in your closet.

A great way to organize shoes is by keeping them in boxes! Clear, stackable boxes or the boxes they came in work great! Install a double hang bar below shorts and skirts; this creates more space between clothes and the floor.

Recently I was asked by a student to assist with his senior project. Now this was no ordinary request because this young man was no ordinary senior. He had a plan. His goal and mission were to not only share a message but to educate other students, faculty, and parents in understanding the challenges that individuals face with autism. He sought my input as an Indianapolis based Image Consultant and Occupational Therapist to contribute to his educational video. The information that I compiled was not only applicable to people who require accommodations but can benefit and “empower” all across the life span, those in grade school, middle school, high school, college, and even returning adults! Hopefully the message will not only benefit you but benefit your family and friends. So pass it along…..

Part I:
We can all walk forward in life believing what the Psalmist wrote – - -

For you formed my inward parts;

You wove me in my mother’s womb.

I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

Marvelous are Your works, and my soul knows it very well. Psalm 139:13-14
Our Master Designer created the natural coloring of your eyes, skin tone, and hair color to work beautifully together! Getting dressed, shampooing and combing our hair, taking a shower, grooming, and taking care of ourselves is an important part of a student’s day. When we do not take time to think things through, mornings can be crazy and fill our lives with anxiety! Developing rituals and routines is important in creating appropriate behavioral and social skills for school, work and life. As a teen, shopping can be a fun past time but it is actually time well spent preparing us to be knowledgeable consumers as adults.

Having worked in the field as an occupational therapist, I encourage you as students, parents, and teachers to think of these everyday activities as moments for learning and teaching behavioral and social skills, etiquette, increasing decision making skills, making transitions into adulthood and most importantly to feel good about who you are and how wonderfully you are made!

Morning and evening routines and visual cues at home; rules, schedules, and routines of hygiene around snacks and meals and gym class at school are important during these transitioning years. Putting up check off lists in the bathroom can assist with developing and mastering independence. Best of all though, planning and coordination of these rituals can simply make life worth living to it’s fullest!

Having taken special certification classes, my role as an occupational therapist has evolved to that of an Indianapolis based image consultant. I strive to assist people to look at how they dress and present themselves as an art and a science of creating their own “signature self-packaging”. I work with people faced with challenges in accomplishing those everyday activities of dressing, grooming, and taking care of themselves. Today I hope that I can share with you fun ways of turning those everyday activities into enjoyable accomplishments because we know:

There is a Positive Connection between How We Dress and present ourselves and How We Feel about ourselves!

Back in 1971, the Garanimals clothing line was developed for small children. Dr. Joyce Brothers said, “Geranimals…help the pre-schooler to handle his/her wardrobe. That sense of ‘I can’ fosters the child’s growing sense of independence.” Today you can still find this line at Walmart, enabling children to mix and match 3 tops and 3 bottoms by the animal on the neck tag with the same animal on the waist band to create 9 different outfits. Every top goes with every bottom in the series. A child can pull out any top and know that it goes with any bottom! The child learns to take pride in his or her independence!

Believe it or not I have had adults and teens come to me and ask if there was not a similar line of clothing for them! Some adults are frustrated with not knowing what to wear to work and some teen girls and guys dislike shopping simply because they do not think they know how to put a wardrobe together! There may not be a “Garanimal” line for teens or adults but there are ways to turn a mess of clothes into a “sweet” organized closet, simplifying laundry, and making it fun to get dressed everyday! Getting dressed can be easy as matching a pair making it fun to wear!

3 Simple Steps can make this all possible:

Know your best colors to build your wardrobe around

Know what not to wear – Avoid clothing that doesn’t make you feel good

Know what to wear — Discover a style or brand that works well with your personality and body build

Learn how to carry out these 3 Simple Steps next week. Watch for Part II.
With simple knowledge, inspiration and praise every child, woman and man can go on recreating herself/himself endlessly!
